STEP back in time and spend a leisurely vacation in historic accommodations at the Lilac House Bed and Breakfast, just a half block or so from Mackinac's boat docks, on the corner of Market and Astor Streets.

SET in the heart of downtown, yet off to one side, The Lilac House occupies arguably the best location of any Hotel or Bed and Breakfast on Mackinac Island.  You can enjoy a quiet swing on the large wrap-around porch while reading, visiting or watching the horses, bikes and people pass by.  Or if you want to get out and about, you can walk anywhere in the downtown area within five or ten minutes.  Feeling adventurous, you can ride a bike or horse, or even take a carriage, to practically anywhere on the Island in a half hour or so.   Mackinac's "no motorized vehicle" laws have kept this unique destination preserved like a charming piece of the past.  So come visit to relax and enjoy the slow-paced way things used to be...

A little background on "MACKINAC".  The name is pronounced "Mackinaw" and is Chippewa for "Big Turtle".  An apt description, since the Island, when viewed from a distance, resembles a partially-submerged turtle with a semi-flat shell.   This is perfectly illustrated by the picture below of my Cousin, taken from the Upper Peninsula town of St. Ignace, with the Island in the background.
